Haris is only 11 years old and he does not have much expectation. He just wants to be able to play football cheerfully with his friends. However, this boy from Cianjur has had an enlarged stomach accompanied by pain in the last 6 months. His face looked pale and weak. Initially, Haris's parents did not notice the pale face on his son due to illness. Apparently, Haris is known to suffer from thalassemia.
Thalassemia is a blood disorder caused by genetic factors and causes proteins in red blood cells (hemoglobin) not to function normally. Iron obtained by the body from food is used by the bone marrow to produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin contained in red blood cells functions to deliver oxygen from the lungs to all members of the body. Patients with thalassemia have low hemoglobin levels, therefore the level of oxygen in the body of patients with thalassemia is also lower. Some examples of symptoms of thalassemia are low body weight, shortness of breath, fatigue, and jaundice.
The condition of Haris's disease requires long-term treatment because it is caused by genetic factors. Everytime he goes to the hospital, he takes 2 hours by motorbike to the nearest health center and more than 4 hours to go to the referral hospital. The trip was quite long and tiring, and costly enough to burden Haris's father whose job is a farmer with income below the average. Currently, Haris requires fees for laboratory tests, as well as transportation and accommodation for medical treatment at the hospital. His mother who takes care of the household everyday hopes that there will be a way so that Haris can get medical treatment properly.
Let's help ease Haris' burden!
